Diamond trader, The Diamond Pro, approached us with a desire to provide buyers an efficient way to choose the perfect stone for their engagement ring or a memorable piece of jewelry.
It wasn’t just about rating the cleanest diamond for the buyer. Such diamonds can be very costly, while a less clean stone might bring just as much satisfaction to the naked eye. Instead, the goal was to enable the buyer to choose the right balance of quality, visual appeal and price. Such balance is not easy to deduce from diamond certificates without expert help.
What we did
We collaborated with The Diamond Pro to create the Ringo tool, an intelligent, AI-based guide to help customers on the diamond market. Ringo enabled our client The Diamond Pro to make diamond assessment more efficient, and save time and money on involving rare experts in daily communication with end buyers, who are now able to solicit instant expert advice online from Ringo.
The tool uses cutting edge image recognition technology to analyze images of diamonds, and it can consistently determine the perceived clarity of a diamond (so-called eye-cleanness) as accurately as a human expert.
How we did it
The underlying models use Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), a subset of deep-learning methods within the field of Artificial Intelligence. The model employed by GoodAI Applied is based on two cutting-edge CNN architectures, modified residual networks. The trained CNNs are very good at extracting the most relevant features from images.
The technical models which make up Ringo were trained using millions of images ranging from, animals, flowers, and food to sports activities, geological formations, and musical instruments. These models were then re-trained using images of labeled diamonds.
